Chiller Cabinet

Chiller Cabinet – Iceland

Iceland has remained one of the world’s last larger islands uninhabited by humans until it was discovered and settled by Norse immigrants from Western Norway in the late 9th century. Hear music tonight from groups such as Mum, Slowblow, Bjork, Johann Joahnnsson, Sigur Ros, Aminna. We also have some artists from near-ish by Norway and some tracks which sound like they should have come from Iceland!

Chiller Cabinet – Trunk Records

Trunk Records was founded by Jonny Trunk ten years ago and has made a name for itself releases of much sought-after material from scores for cult films such as Deep Throat, Kes, The Wicker Man and George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. Other releases include soundtracks for cult UK Television series such as The Tomorrow People, UFO, Bod and Vernon Elliot’s much-loved score for The Clangers. So with this decade anniversary comes a 23 track best of CD (all for a fiver) and there are even some unreleased gems to discover. The Chiller Cabinet raises a glass and sings ‘for he’s a jolly good fellow’ to Jonny and all at Trunk Records, nostalgia, cult tv, and library music doesn’t get much better than this….

Chiller Cabinet – Johann Johannsson

Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Iceland-born musician, composer and producer. Jóhann´s stately, slow-building and hauntingly melodic music, which frequently combines electronics with classical orchestrations, has been quietly bewitching listeners since he released his first solo record Englabörn in 2002 on the well respected British label Touch. The record was re-released in 2007 by 4AD, by which time its reputation had grown as an influential recording in the burgeoning field that has been variously called post-classical or neo-classical.

Chiller Cabinet – Cocteau Twins

I can’t find any info on this mix from the time I made it. But here is some blurb about the brilliant album the show is wrapped around. From Last.fm:

“The Moon and the Melodies (1986) is the product of a one-off collaboration between the Scottish group Cocteau Twins and the American composer Harold Budd. The Cocteau Twins refused to sign the album with the band’s name and used their individual names instead.

“The album has the characteristic style — heavily-treated guitar sounds and strangely euphoric vocalising — that can be heard in the group’s other work from the same period, for example on the EP “Echoes in a Shallow Bay” or the album Victorialand. Harold Budd’s stylistic piano tonalities and phrasing on this project are echoed in his solo album, Lovely Thunder, from the same year.”
